What exactly is ProWritingAid?
ProWritingAid offers a top grammar editor and style editor for bloggers and novelists. The software for editing is able to remove mistakes, improve the word selection, and swiftly edit grammar and punctuation.
It’s great for checking your blog posts, articles, books, and even an editor’s note.
ProWritingAid editing software can be accessed through web browsers for both Windows and Mac. It supports Microsoft Word, Google Docs and, even more intriguingly, Scrivener.
At the time at the time of writing, the company didn’t offer any Android or iOS apps.
Although anyone can use this software for proofreading and grammar checking the content, it’s especially appropriate for writers of fiction.
ProWritingAid Staff notes:
We’ve even been informed that Stephen King uses ProWritingAid , however, we’re unable to verify this. (If you happen to meet Stephen King at a gathering, please ask.) We’re sure he’s not an adverbial lover like us!
In this ProWritingAid review, I’ll explain why fiction writers will appreciate ProWritingAid or grammar check software especially useful.

You can make use of ProWritingAid as a grammar and spell checker. It can also improve your writing’s readability.
ProWritingAid lets you search for:
A spelling or grammar mistake
Sticky, repetitive sentences
Poor word choice, such as abstract, ambiguous and redundant words
ProWritingAid I thoroughly tried both the desktop application and web application. I’ll explain in more detail how ProWritingAid operates at the conclusion of this review. Here is the basic workflow.
Open the ProWritingAid desktop program
Upload your document into ProWritingAid (supports Word, Scrivener, Markdown, text files and much more)
It scans the document
The panel opens that contains blog post content and other content you have uploaded to grammar checking.
The spell checker feature underlines spelling errors in red
For a suggestion of an improvement, hover over any underlined word in the editing tool.
The ProWritingAid features let you to check the content of your story or article for:
Terms that are frequently used
Sticky sentences: Sentences that slow down your reader

This online editor tool can generate reports on all the different aspects of your text. It also gives suggestions on how you can improve each part of the writing process.
You can also get more
This tool for writing assistance goes beyond grammar checks. It also acts as a writing mentor by comparing your writing to the best in your field.
The reports function as part of P RoWritingAid and are displayed on the top of the editing toolbar. ProWritingAid comes with 22 reports which are sufficient for a typical writer. The paid version has 25 reports.
I’ve tried a variety of grammar and spelling-checkers and found them to be extremely limited in their capacity to offer the precise information needed by writers.

A lot of my users want to know if the content they post on ProWritingAid may be stolen or plagiarized.
Here’s my answer: ProWritingAid is safe.
The tool doesn’t store or save any text submitted after the analysis is completed. This is the case for the paid and free editions.
ProWritingAid Refund Policy
ProWritingAid offers 14-day returns if you aren’t completely happy with the service.
What I thought of the ProWritingAid after reviewing it
Forbes and Forbes Magazine both publish more nonfiction articles than I write fiction. Here is my usual procedure for using an English grammar test on these articles:
Scrivener or IA Writer can be used to create the article
Copy and paste a draft of a draft IA Scrivener or Scrivener into my favorite editing tool
To find any errors, look it up
These can be fixed directly in the document source using IA Scrivener or Scrivener
Send or publish an editor
While writing this ProWritingAid review I noticed a shift in my writing workflow that saved me time and money.
I opened my source file using the desktop program and then edited my documents with the professional writing aid editor tool, not cutting or copying.
The grammar checker I saw on the screen impressed me as a tool ideal for novelists and fiction writers.
Grammarly and Ginger two top grammar checkers restrict the number of words you can scan at one time. This means you can only examine a book on a chapter-by- chapter basis.
ProWritingAid however allows you to open documents of any size (e.g. your book) and then review them all at once.
Similarly the ability to review the writing piece for readability, cliches and passive voice is a useful feature for writers looking to write more engaging stories.
Please be aware that the application for desktops works when connected to an internet connection. If you wish to write offline, please connect while you use this application.
Grammar checking in a book
ProWritingAid I used to test two different versions of my book. The first was to upload an approximately 45,000-word draft of my new book as a Microsoft Word document to ProWritingAid.
ProWritingAid is now available
There are a few mistakes in my writing. If I had to do this using another software, I would simply upload individual chapters into ProWritingAid.
The application ran an examination of the device and discovered 261 mistakes to fix. It also provided additional suggestions. These included style issues.
ProWritingAid allows you to detect style issues. ProWritingAid also allowed me to scan specific sections of my book, instead of the whole manuscript.
The ProWritingAid reports were slower when there was a large manuscript than when I had to check the individual chapters and articles. It takes a lot of time to analyze lengthy chunks of writing.
A full manuscript couldn’t be checked at once and, therefore, it was more time-consuming than examining each chapter one by one.
Then I opened my brand new book’s Scrivener project using the desktop application. I enjoyed more success with this method.
It didn’t slow down, and offered lots of useful suggestions for improving the manuscript.
I also enjoyed the fact that I could save changes right back to my Scrivener projects. ProWritingAid has been a valuable tool for my Scrivener projects.

Sticky sentences report
The sticky sentences report deserves a a special mention. It will help you realize the extent to which your sentences have glue words, that is words that take up space before a reader is able to grasp your concept e.g.
“We are aware that he’s not a fan adverbs!” Glue Index: 61.5% vs. Redraft
“Like us, he’s not a fan of adjectives!” Glue Index: 42.8 percent – Sentence length. ProWritingAid has many insights that you can use to edit your articles and books. It’s your decision what to accept and what to leave out.
It also provides context and guidance for errors if you are unsure.
How to Use ProWritingAid to Check for Plagiarism
The application also comes with an plagiarism-checker which is certain to be a hit with nonfiction writers as well as students. This tool is only available when you have earned sufficient credits.
Click on More to view the report on plagiarism.
ProWritingAid can use your credit. If you don’t have one, you can purchase one.
Check out anything in blue. ProWritingAid will notify you when there is accidental or deliberate plagiarism. Edit, correct or fix the text, reference, or address.
Also, check out the hyperlinks in the report. These are instances in which this report has been utilized online.
ProWritingAid was a desktop app which I used to review. Then I checked several chapters in my book. You won’t be alarmed to know that I didn’t plagiarise as I was working on my book.
However, some chapters of my book were based on pieces I composed for Forbes or posted on Medium.
I often write articles and then modify them for a different audience. ProWritingAid could identify the book chapters that were based off Forbes articles, and I was curious to find out whether ProWritingAid could.
I was thrilled to find that it passed the test. It also gave me hyperlinks to my Forbes articles and Medium posts.
This plagiarism checker is perfect for students writing academic papers and anyone who wants to scan their writing to make sure it’s not being misappropriated elsewhere.
It could also be used to help you locate citations in non-fiction books if there is a link you forgot.
This covers the fundamentals of using ProWritingAid. You can always reach their customer support for further assistance if you have concerns. Let’s look at how ProWritingAid works with your current writing and editing software.
Integration of ProWritingAid Tools into Online Writing Resources
ProWritingAid can be used by using dedicated online tools for writing, including Google Docs, Scrivener and word processor.
These are the steps to connect these systems:
How do you make use of Google Docs and Chrome ProWritingAid
ProWritingAid offers a Chrome browser extension.
After installation, ProWritingAid checks your writing anywhere you go with its mobile plugin. It is able to check for grammar errors in emails and social media posts.
To scan Google documents it is necessary to install a separate plug-in. It provides summary reports of the content you’ve written. This add-on works best when you write in Google docs. It won’t give you access to the full editor. Instead, hover over spelling errors and other grammar problems.
How do you use ProWritingAid in conjunction with Scrivener
Scrivener is used by many indie authors to create their novels. ProWritingAid supports Scrivener projects.
Start a Scrivener file in ProWritingAid. It will then show the structure of your folder file. Now navigate to each folder in your Scrivener file and correct any mistakes while on the move.
I haven’t found this feature on any of the paid grammar checkers.
If you’re using Scrivener frequently, you’ll discover it a real time-saver.
How to add ProWritingAid into Word
ProWritingAid can be downloaded as an add-in to Microsoft Word and Outlook. The add-in is available only for Windows. Unfortunately, it wasn’t tested in a proper manner.
In my research for this ProWritingAid evaluation, however I found another option. Open a Word document using ProWritingAid. The program will check your document for grammar and mistakes.
The issues are fixable directly in the app.
Grammarly is the most used alternative to WhiteSmoke. I reviewed the top grammar checkers and then compared them to ProWritingAid. ProWritingAid, however, is an inexpensive alternative to Grammarly.
If you are looking for reviewing Grammarly, take a look at Grammarly Review.
A human editor is still a good idea if you write books.
ProWritingAid Vs Grammarly
ProWritingAid took me a bit longer to learn than Grammarly and Grammarly.
Rather than using text boxes to present information to the right of my writing, I was required to click on specific errors within a document to review the issue.
Grammarly doesn’t exist on this application, which might dissuade people who prefer to write on their tablets or iPads.
The writing report was extremely enjoyable. They are more thorough than those offered by grammar checkers. These will be of great benefit to anyone editing drafts of articles or books.
Self-editing is possible by learning to recognize the length and usage of abstract and vague phrases.
ProWritingAid Versus Other Grammar Checkers
ProWritingAid detects errors that are more severe than the built-in grammar checker in Word and Google docs. It is your responsibility to decide if you’d like to take ProWritingAid’s suggestions into consideration. I suggest using a proofreader for publishing longer pieces of writing, such as books.
