If you’ve ever had to write a piece of writing, you’ll know that mistakes are inevitable. They happen to all of us, from accidental typos to not being able to find exactly the right word to so many grammar nuances it’s difficult for me to keep track of them all.
A competent editor or teacher of writing would be the ideal. (I admit that I’m an editor so it is possible that I am biased. But, it is true. There is no substitute for the knowledge and experience of a human being who understands language and can help to communicate your ideas effectively.

ProWritingAid An Editor’s Review
I’ve heard positive reviews about ProWritingAid from writers that I believe in. However, I was skeptical about ProWritingAid’s role as an editor. Can software be able to spot every mistake in my work? Could it be used to replace a human editor? What could it mean for writers?
Also, I must admit I was a little unsure about one thing: Could I write with such ease that ProWritingAid could not be able to find anything that could be criticized?
ProWritingAid I decided to test it myself to see how it performs.
Before we begin, let me clarify that I wasn’t paid for this review. However, I also would like to be honest and let you know that this review includes affiliate links. Let’s start with a quick review of ProWritingAid.
ProWritingAid is described as “a grammar coach, writer’s mentor, style editor, and style editor in one.” It’s a piece that works as both a grammar checker, spelling checker, and style checker.
ProWritingAid is for editors, copywriters and students. It will assist you in writing better, no matter how experienced or new to writing.
You can choose from either a premium or paid version. Of course, with the premium version, you’ll have significantly more options and support.
What are its features? Let’s take a look.
Grammar and spelling checkers
This is the cornerstone of all writing software and ProWritingAid provides. It is more robust than Microsoft Word in grammar and spelling check.
Red underlining is used to highlight spelling mistakes and blue underlining is for grammar. My most favorite feature is the box that appears whenever you hover over underlined text. The box offers a suggested correction and a detailed explanation.
A real-time error detector will also be available that will automatically count and point out all errors it finds. It doesn’t show how many issues you have written. Turn it on or off at any point.
More than a Dictionary and Thesaurus
Most writing software comes with an integrated dictionary or thesaurus. ProWritingAid is an sophisticated version of these tools, providing a dictionary, a tosaurus, as well as many words suggestions tools.

So far, so good. However, at this point I have to admit that I felt certain that I could the best ProWritingAid as an editor.
ProWritingAid provided me with analysis that was so useful even though I am a lover of grammar.
Below, I’ve listed several ProWritingAid dictionaries, reports and checkers. Those barely even scratch the surface of the tools ProWritingAid provides.
There are many reports that can be used to evaluate your writing in various ways. They are all available, but I’ll only mention a handful.
Writing Style Report
This report is the most effective for quickly and easily cleaning up your prose after the spell and grammar tools. Writing Style Report evaluates the quality of your writing and makes suggestions for improvement. It identifies elements that are part of the style of writing, such as:
Passive voice
Hidden verbs
Adverbs that are overused
Repetition of sentence start points
It will let you know exactly what you can do to improve your writing style and improve the enjoyment of your readers.
The Word Count Report & Sentence Length Report
A lot of writing tools have word counters, but the Sentence Length report is so far more effective than the word counter.
Yes, it can determine the number of words and characters that are contained in your document. It will also take every word in each sentence and show the words as a dazzling graphic. You’ll be able to see your typical sentence length as well as how your sentence length is different, and it will alert you to any lengthy sentences.

Some backstory is good but if you go overboard, you’ll start to bore your readers. This tool can detect sections in your manuscript that are slowing down, and you can instantly see whether it’s overly long or not.
The Plagiarism Report
Plagiarism has long been a concern for writers. Our Plagiarism report will help ease your mind. ProWritingAid analyzes the contents of millions of academic papers and books and will analyze your writing to find any plagiarism in these documents.
The Plagiarism Checker is not included in the standard Premium package, unlike other ProWritingAid reports. You can upgrade your Premium Plus package to get fifty checks for plagiarism each year and you can also buy checks are only needed.
The House Report
Do you write for an organization with a stylebook for its employees? ProWritingAid will help you find patterns and rules for your writing.

Let me add one caveat to this debate Grammar checkers and writing tools are important.
Grammar checks are intended to identify and propose solutions to grammar problems in writing. ProWritingAid can understand context and usage and offer the best solutions. However, ProWritingAid is a grammar checker that can assist you in understanding the context and recommend the right solutions. It is your choice to reject suggestions that don’t work.
No matter what grammar checker you choose, if you blanket accept every change it suggests it will bring new mistakes into your writing. Grammar checkers can’t substitute for a professional editor in this way.
They will help you get closer to perfect editing your writing. ProWritingAid features go far beyond grammar check. It’s a great instrument for writers.
The Bottom Line Is This Editor Recommend ProWritingAid?
Truth be told I was skeptical when I first began. I believe strongly in the importance of an experienced editor. Even with the many reports ProWritingAid provides, I do not think there can ever be a perfect replacement for human interaction.
